Our Story

Generations Rooted in Shorthorns

Shorthorns have been in Tom’s family for generations. His grandfather, Jed Baker, started to register his milking shorthorns in the mid 1950’s. His herd name was Namepi Shorthorns and his tattoo letters were USN. Jed, along with his son John and daughter Jane, registered Shorthorns until the late 1960’s. When Jed passed away in 1967, John continued with Shorthorn cattle but did not paper them. He always used a purebred bull from Albert Fairholm of Pemrock Shorthorns from Westlock, AB. Many of those maternal lines stayed in our herd through the years as commercial cattle. Shorthorn cattle have been on this farm for 75 years — a legacy built through generations of hard work, dedication, and a genuine love for the breed.

Where It Began

In March of 1991, one of Uncle John’s calves lost her mother. Uncle John did not want a bottle calf so Tom stepped up and took her home, which was just down the road. The calf was named Puff and Tom bottle fed this calf using milk from his mother’s milking cows, no milk replacer needed there. Puff went on to have several calves for Tom and he still remembers her fondly as the cow that truly sparked his journey with the Shorthorn breed.

Building a Program Together

In June of 2000, Tom and Shari began their journey with purebred Shorthorns. In 2001, Sharom Shorthorns came into being.

The first bull they purchased together was Six S Keystone 59K from the Schutz family in Stony Plain, AB. Keystone was the main herdsire for 5 years here and there are still many maternal lines that go back to him in the herd. It was an emotional day when he was loaded for the last time in 2005.

The Surefire Shorthorn Sale at Clyde, AB was where Shari’s first Shorthorn was purchased. Cookie was her name and her daughters, grand daughters and great granddaughters are still here today.

Together, Tom and Shari have worked hard together to build the herd into what it is today. Building their program around strong cattle, dependable cow families, and a lasting passion for the Shorthorn Breed.
